Vaultedge Newsletter: Wrapping up March - Women's History Month
Dear friends, colleagues and customers,
The month of March was celebrated as Women's History Month. A month to commemorate the contributions made by women in society and its various aspects. When we started Vaultedge, we did it to make a dent on the universe. But we also wanted to do it while creating a well-balanced culture inside the company. It is not only the right thing to do, but it also makes business sense.
While we must dedicate the month of March to celebrating the progression of equal gender opportunities, it should also serve as a reminder that there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. We definitely have come a long way, with more than 67% of realtors today being women.
To rewind a little bit - Real estate was established as a valid industry in the 1840s. Women went from working as clerks in real estate to becoming licensed agents and brokers in the 1880s. However, for several years the real estate profession was a ‘boys club’. In 1908, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) was founded with an all-male membership, even though there were around 3,000 female brokers working nationally. Although there wasn’t a ban on female NAR membership, many local Associations did ban female membership.
The Women’s Council of Realtors was founded in 1938 as a parallel organization to NAR. In 1973, NAR extended its membership to women. Within 5 years, the majority of NAR members were women and the number of women real estate agents grew to 300,000.
To quote Martin Luther King, Jr., ‘The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.’ It took years and years of struggle for women to gain a foothold in the real estate industry and their success in the present times is a testament to his words.
I hope you will find our issue interesting and informative.
